Yes. Even with an open growth plate, surgery may be necessary depending on the type and severity of the injury.
For pediatric fractures, the fixation method and whether surgery is needed are determined based on the child's age, the location and pattern of the fracture, and whether the growth plate is affected.
For ACL injuries, we first check whether the tear is partial or complete. If it is partial, non-surgical treatment is considered first.
For a complete tear, the need for surgery is determined by considering activity level, knee instability, associated injuries, and anesthesia/surgical risk.
The decision to operate is made by evaluating bone age, growth plate status, and remaining growth potential. At Seoul One Hospital, Chief Directors Dr. Won-Joon Yoo and Dr. Hyuk-Ju Moon consult together, drawing on the expertise gained from extensive case experience, to proceed with the method best suited to each patient.
In addition, when there is growth plate injury, we don't stop at treatment—we continue to monitor the child's subsequent growth.
